Band

Band is an organization designed to give interested students an opportunity to learn and participate in a variety of band music and to participate in an active organization.  Band students will enroll as a class, during the regular school day.  Extra rehearsal time and sectional will be scheduled as deemed necessary by the directors.  Attendance at the rehearsals will be necessary in order to maintain membership in the group.  During the year, a variety of performances and competitions will be scheduled.  Members must participate in these activities to remain in good standing.

Cheerleading

Cheerleading is a competitive performing group that will compete against other squads while providing spirit and performances at athletic events.  The objective of cheerleading is to learn stunts, cheers, chants, and gymnastic skills incorporated in competitive programs and performance programs.

Additional duties include pep assembly skits, spirit decoration of school facilities, homecoming participation and fund raising for cheerleading group.

Cheerleaders will be selected by independent judges during a spring tryout each year.  The successful cheerleader will meet OSSAA eligibility requirements in order to participate.

Student Council

Student Council is a chance for members to participate in activities that represent the school.  These activities occur both in and out of school.  To be able to participate in these activities, members must not have discipline problems.  Being a Student Council member means representing Student Council and Wells Middle School. Elections for officers will be held at the end of the previous school year.

Some Student Council sponsored activities are:  dances, candy gram sales, Red Ribbon Week, Teacher Appreciation Week, Pasta for Pennies (Leukemia Society), and American Education Week.

Please review the Wells Middle School Handbook for the rules and regulations of how to become a member of Student Council.

National Junior Honor Society

Membership in National Junior Honor Society is an honor bestowed upon a student.  Students do not apply for membership.  Selection for membership is by a Faculty Council and is based on outstanding scholarship, leadership, service, character and citizenship.  Membership is not automatically conveyed upon a student simply because of academic performance.  Only students who have attended Wells Middle School for at least one semester are eligible.  Once selected, members have the responsibility to continue to demonstrate these qualities.  The national minimum standard for scholarship shall be a cumulative scholastic average of at least a 3.5 GPA (85%).  Candidates shall then be evaluated on the basis of service, leadership, character, and citizenship.  Members must also participate in group and individual service projects throughout the year and are involved in the extremely important job of interviewing new teacher candidates during the summer.  Teacher candidates are asked to prepare and teach a mini-lesson to our NJHS students.  These students are then given the opportunity to evaluate these candidates and their opinions are a valuable part of the interview process.
