RE: New Personal Electronic Device Policy – Effective the 2025-2026 School Year

Dear Catoosa parents and families,

The Catoosa Board of Education approved a new Personal Electronic Device Policy last night at its regularly scheduled meeting, in accordance with Oklahoma State Law (70 O.S. §1-126). This policy will go into effect at the start of the 2025-2026 school year and applies to all Catoosa Public School students.

Beginning this fall, students will no longer be allowed to use personal electronic devices during the school day, from the first instructional bell to the final dismissal bell. Prohibited items include cell phones, smart watches, wireless earbuds/headphones, tablets, and similar connected devices.

Key Highlights:

  • Possession is allowed, but use during the school day is not.

  • School-issued devices are exempt and may be used for instruction.

  • Emergency exceptions apply for:

    • Health or safety emergencies

    • Medical monitoring (e.g., diabetes care) with documentation

    • IEP, 504, or Medical Plan accommodations that explicitly require device use

  • Devices used improperly will be confiscated and returned at day’s end.

  • Repeated violations may result in disciplinary consequences and loss of device privileges.

This new law supports a learning environment free from distractions, encourages academic focus, and promotes student well-being. We ask for your support in reviewing these changes with your child to ensure a smooth transition in August.

If your child has a medical or educational need related to device use, please contact your building principal or counselor before the start of the school year.

In service,

Robert Schornick

Superintendent
